Back and forth transformation – a Japanese fascination

Japanese culture expresses a deep cynicism. Whether it’s Pokemon, Transformers, or most other anime, it’s characters change back and forth between multiple forms. One common duality is the cute and harmless / vicious and warlike. Another is the silly and playful / serious and weighty. It’s as if every character is a tool which transforms itself into whatever the situation requires. By doing this these characters show themselves to have no free will. The externally generated context is their cage.
